In Europe and in many other parts of the world, thy phenomenon hooligans

is believed to be very dangerous occurrence in society. ... This

research paper examines the history of football and its inseparable connection to

violence since its early years.

The roots of football reach back into the 13th century, and historians claim

it was played on Shrove Tuesday (last day of carnival before Lent) and other holy

days and has always been connected with violence.
As a result, from the 13th to the 19th centuries football

was to appear in legal records, court cases and contemporary

denunciations as a violent game; a cause and occasion of social

unrest in which personal and collective scores could be settled. ...

In the 17th century football received more legitimacy when football

fraternities held dinners on “Shrove Tuesday” that became synonymous with

football games. Football has obviously presented a reason for crowds to gather;

identified as rowdy and uncontrollable (Walvin 56)

As late as the eighteen century footballing apprentices frequently

disrupted London life.

I spy the furies of the football war:

The Prentice quits his shop, to join the crew,

increasing Crowds the flying Game pursue (Walvin 56)

.
In the 19th century interest with football was reinforced by schoolmasters to

emphasize that discipline and sportsmanship including, colleges such as Eton,

Harrow, and Westminster.
