The Glass Ceiling in Sports:
Sports have long been thought to be a model for breaking down racial barriers, but minorities who want to advance to leadership positions face a glass ceiling. The glass ceiling present in sports is too large a topic to fit in one paper. This paper will focus on the glass ceiling that aspiring minority head football coaches face, because of the racism in sports. This topic appealed to me because sports are commonly thought to be a model for racial harmony. The NFL and other organizations like to portray team sports as something where people of all races work together to achieve a common goal. Movies like Brian’s Song detail the interracial friendship that team sports bring. ... One thing about sports as always bothered me though, if sports are a place where racial prejudices are checked at the door, why are there so few minority head football coaches? True, this question can be raised about other sports, but football is the ideal arena to tackle the issue of the glass ceiling that minorities face. ...
Those who insist sports only breakdown racial barriers say the situation is improving. ... Advocates of sports as a model for race relations say the reason for so few minority head coaches is not racial stacking. ... They say the few number of minority head coaches is a society problem, not a sports problem.
