The Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum is one of the essential learning areas outlined in the New Zealand Curriculum Framework. In this essay I will explain how the Health and Physical Education Curriculum is constructed, describe the major components and then how they work together.
The Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum has been designed to encompass the physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual dimensions of a person’s growth (Ministry of Education, 1993). ... The focus of the curriculum is on quality of life with the primary goal of total well-being, hauora (Department of Health and Human Development, 2002).
The curriculum incorporates health education, physical education, and aspects of home economics. “The structure of this curriculum is based on general aims, strands, achievement aims, achievement objectives, underlying concepts, and key areas of learning” (Ministry of Education, 1999, p. ... The four general aims of the curriculum have been divided into Strands: Personal Health and Physical Development; Movement Concepts and Motor Skills; Relationships with other People; and Healthy Communities and Environments.
