Abdullah Ahmad English 112 Dr. Schmidt Fiction Essay Rough Draft Use of Surprises Often times, writers throw in surprise twists into the plots of the stories they write. These surprises often time catch the readers off guard, and can change the entire meaning of a story. The reader is thinking one thing, and assumes they know what is going on when, suddenly they are thrown for a loop and have to re-evaluate the situations. Authors, Grace Paley, in “Samuel”, and Kate Chopin in “The Story of an Hour, both used the element of surprise in their respective stories. In both cases the surprises affected the meaning of the story for the reader. “Samuel”, by Grace Paley, takes place in the mid 20th century, and is the story of four inner-city children, whose are presumed to be of middle school aged, who are playing in between the platforms of subway cars. As Samuel and his three friends, Alfred, Tom and Calvin ride along the platforms, the passengers of the subway look on with mixed feelings. Some of the men on the bus were reminiscing about their childhood when they would do similar behavior.
