Most people assume that cheerleading has always been a female activity, but men actually invented cheerleading, and they are still prevalent in it today. ... Cheerleading was created in 1898, but women didn’t become involved until the 1920s.
The history of cheerleading goes as far back as the late 1880s when the first organized and recorded yell was performed on an American campus. ... In 1884, Thomas Peebles took that cheer to the University of Minnesota where cheerleading came into being. ... Because of this publication, cheerleading officially began on the date of the game, November 12, 1898. ... From this point forward, cheerleading began to grow exponentially.
