Mathematics of Basketball

The main focus of this paper is to explore the sport of basketball and make mathematical connections and applications to the game. I thought it would be interesting to take an activity in which I have an interest, such as basketball, and to discover the ways that math can be applied to it. Basketball is a popular sport across the world, but the math involved with basketball is not thought of often. I have researched books and the internet to find basic mathematical concepts of basketball. Most of the math involved is based on concepts of physicsThe principals and ideas of mathematics can be found in just about every aspect of life today. ... One such example is basketball. In every movement or action in a basketball game, there is some kind of mathematical application that explains the way the game works. The main mathematical approach to basketball which best defines the game is physics.

The main study of physics in basketball is the application of dynamics and motion. ... These two studies are used throughout the mathematical approach to basketball.

To first understand the mathematics of basketball, one must know Newton’s Laws of Motion, which are main fundamentals of physics. ... These laws which define characteristics of motion are the main foundation for the mathematics applications of basketball. ... Collisions occur in basketball at every part of the game. ... Newton’s third law can be applied with shooting or dribbling as a basketball rebounds off of a floor or backboard (Physics par 3). One type of collisions which is the most common in basketball are elastic collisions. ... This idea can be applied to move a basketball or even another player, for basketball is a physical sport. ... A basketball is therefore passed, dribbled, and shot because of a force that pushes it enough to its mass. ... This is the force which makes an object accelerate, like when a basketball player runs. ... This is applied to a passed basketball. ...

Inertia is also an important physics principal which is commonly applied in basketball. ...

The next mathematical idea of basketball would need to be the idea of energy.
