Many people feel they are undeserving of the salaries which they are paid. These people believe that money spent on player’s salaries would be better spent in such professions as teaching or policing. Granted teaching and policing are professions worthy of decent salaries. Still, one has to consider the fact that NFL players deserve respectable salaries. Professional football players deserve the salaries they make due to the supply and demand of the sport, the punishment and risk involved with the sport, and the inspiration and community outreach that players provide. There is a certain supply and demand that comes with any market and it just so happens that the supply and demand that occurs with the NFL is very profitable. “The average salary of $1,169,470 reflects a 5% increase over 1999, according to NFL Players Association documents. ... While the early owners had taken Business 101 and knew that fighting for players would rapidly escalate prices, the more recent club owners knew that signing the marquee players would not only attract more fans, but also the premium advertisers that end up financing new stadiums and fund player’s salaries. The NFL started as the American Professional Football Association back in the 1920 with only “14 football teams. ... The first player traded was Bob Nash: He was traded from Akron to Buffalo for $300 and, five percent of the gate receipts . That trade was the first time a player was paid money to play (NFL History). ... This is true because every year that more people watch football games, player salaries go up. When attendance goes down player salaries go down. There is so much punishment and risk involved with football that the National Football Leagues average player tenure is only three years. ... “It is a sad fact in the NFL: Injuries continue to gradually get worse. Each week, we seem to see another player immobilized and carted off the field on a stretcher. The league hasnt had a player die during a game since Detroit wide receiver Chuck Hughes collapsed and died of a heart attack on Oct. ... Hughes death is the only fatality in modern NFL history, but as players get bigger and faster, that likely will change” (ESPN). Being a NFL player is one of the most dangerous professions in the world. ... Last fall, in Costa Mesa, California, high school football player Matthew Colby died from a head injury, 15 hours after collapsing during a game. |
