Politics in Figure Skating
|
|
|
... ”
When the words figure skating and politics are mentioned in the same sentence
only one thing comes to mind, Salt Lake City. For the first time, the world was exposed
to the political side of figure skating. When the Canadian pairs team, Jamie Sale and
David Pelletier, exited the ice on the night of Monday, February 11th, 2002 neither one
thought that they would fall victim to the figure skating political curse. However, politics
prevailed; and the two were placed in second behind a team of Russians who skated a less
than perfect program. The evil side of figure skating must be stopped!
Every time a skater steps onto the ice, not only is their skating judged, but their
entire background is brought into consideration. ... If skating is so political, then why does anyone do it? If you ask most skaters,
they will tell you they do it because they truly love it; and the politics don’t really bother
them.
