Eric Hewitt September 25, 2003 Period 3 English Essay Titles and Their Importance to the Themes The first story we read was “Araby” by James Joyce. The theme was puppy love. When the boy goes to the market, or Araby, he tries to find something to buy for Mangan’s sister. However, the Araby lets him down so he realizes what has happened and gazes into the darkness. The second story we read was “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D.H. Lawrence. The theme was luck. The rocking horse was the thing he used to win races. So when he won money he thought he was lucky. If it was called “The Races”, then the rocking horse probably wouldn’t have as big as an effect on the story.
