Rugby League
History:
The "Rugby" Game in the 1800’s
The theory of ‘Webb Ellis picking up the ball and running with it in a soccer match isn’t true, now the truth… It was in the 1800’s, The Origins of Rugby evolved from the early rules of soccer, in England, which actually allowed handling of the ball in a limited form. The students and old-boys of Rugby School then developed these "handling" rules away from soccer. Until the 1860s clubs were being formed to play the "Rugby" game. ...
The Great Divide in 1895

The Northern Rugby Union was formed at an 1895 meeting held at The George Hotel, Huddersfield, it is now known as Rugby League. More rugby clubs joined the NRU than with the RFU, within a few years. ...
Rugby in Australia
Rugby League began in Australia in NSW in the 1860s. ...
Queensland Rugby Union was founded in 1882 with its first clubs being Brisbane, Wallaroo, Excelsior and Ipswich. ... In Sydney a "district-rule" rugby competition was introduced in 1900 and it soon included Glebe, Balmain, Wests, Souths, Norths, University, Easts, Sydney, Newtown, Manly and St George.
Though many of the laws of both games were still the same, Australias rugby game withstood the challenge from Australian Rules because of its physical "play" and the hold it had in NSW country and in Queensland with young men.
