Although rugby has been played in Australia since approximately the 1850’s, its reputation and popularity has grown considerably since that time. Nowdays there is a womens’ league, although it receives significantly less coverage through advertising and news reports than the original league played only by males. This masculine history of the game has also most probably impacted on the ‘mans game’ reputation of Rugby league today.
This brings me to the next point, of analysing the Australian discourses that are presented by the game of Rugby League, and how they are perpetuated to represent the Australian culture. The discourse of masculinity operates and is extremely foregrounded in the game of Rugby League, mostly supported by the way in which the game is played.
