There are few subjects that attract as much controversy as the issue of whether sport and politics should mix. ... The liberal line is that politics and sport should be kept separate. ... Politics, on the other hand, is about governments and politicians. According to liberals, politicians and governments may have their differences, but sports should never be mixed up with these differences. ... Sports, as fun as they are, can also become a weapon. ... The conflict between sports and politics remains the strongest over two topics: the English National Cricket team and their boycott of playing Zimbabwe, and the ongoing conflicts that the Balkan States are having regarding politicians or political groups and their sports. ... Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, English cricket writers, mainly conservative types, argued that it was wrong to boycott South Africa and Rhodesia because of apartheid, on the basis that cricket and politics do not mix. Now that Rhodesia has merged into Zimbabwe, the same critics are not so sure that politics and sport don’t mix. ... The truth is that most people do not have a consistent policy on politics and sport. ... But, indeed, the game is not the reason for making sports attractive to politicians, nor is it the competitive nature. Sports are popular and among one of the subjects among the voting public, and therefore capable as a very transmissible activity, so it is excellent for exploitation for the purposes of power. ... At the turn of the century, every regime in the Balkans began to fall, but for some time the thought of anti-sports lingered as the thought of the continuation of war through other means remained. ...
The presence of politics at sports stadiums in Federalist Republic of Yugoslavia could best be illustrated by a known criminal, Zeljko Arkan, who for several years realized that he could make vast amounts of money through football. ... Meanwhile, rumors were spreading that out of fear held for Arkan, the referees gave penalties to opposing team too often, so that it all of a sudden triumphed over the big teams such as Zvezda and Partizan
For the regime of Slobodan Milosevic, sports were an exceptionally important part of the global state and national project.
