Sports Violence: Fact or Fiction?
In today’s society, it is extremely hard to attend a sports function and not witness an act of violence. Sports have become violent from pressuring parents, coaches, and contributing, are the violent role models in the world of professional sports. Sports have become an area where violent acts such as hitting and fighting should be eliminated. However, some people believe that if violence was taken out of the game, it would change many things about sports popularity. Many of the professional leagues, such as the National Football League (NFL) and the National Hockey League (NHL), have been asked to remove violence from their sport (Giulianotti, 56). Again, they had to advise their spectators that they could not exclude violence because it draws in the audiences (Giulianotti, 56-57). On the other hand, there are people who believe that violence in sports has gone excessively far. Violence has traveled from not only on the field, but also in to the homes (Giulianotti, 137). Professionals are now being arrested for violence in their homes. ... Are there ways that we can decrease the violence and set good examples for all future athletes, or are sports going to become a place were violence is the key to the game?
Sports are found all over the world. Baseball, basketball, soccer, horse racing, all of theses sports are universal events. Unfortunately, they all have one thing in common, violence. Players have become very aware that sports are more about money and violence than about the game (Miedzain, online). ... When this was stated, people started to finally realize that sports are now about violence and not about that game.
When you attend a sports event, you are considered a visitor, or a fan. ... Cars were overturned, building set on fire and the school campus destroyed, all because of a sports game (Harris, online). When fans do this kind of destruction, it makes people think about what the sports industry is really coming to. Have people sunk so low that they resort to violence, or are they doing it for attention?
Violence on the field has drifted into the homes of professional sports faster then anyone thought it would and no one else believed it would happen. Unfortunately, violence has always been found at home, but it was never expected form a sports player. Yet, it seems that in today’s society more
professional sports players are being charged with murder, abuse, or other types of crime, more than any normal citizen (Donatelli, online). ... These two acts of murder, it has left the spectators wondering what is happening to the sports industry.
In the sports world today there are many causes for violence. The main causes are poor sportsmanship and that the media is accepting that violence is “ok” to commit (Messener, 156). We as a society are attracted to this sort of
violence and there is nothing we can do to change it (Messener, 155).
