The Sport inside the sport

2. I gave you these problems not to see if you could solve the problems, but to rather observe your reactions to the problems. Typically when you get into a group situation you observe certain types of behavior. In order to be a successful coach, you must understand how people will react in a learning situation. a) The first observation was immediate quiet as each of you tried to gain understanding b) Secondly was a development of team dynamics as one person spoke, and others thought/listened c) The third stage was shared discussion of information – 1 to 1 – altogether d) The fourth observation was the development of possible solutions – this is the Brainstorming stage of a learning situation e) The final observation was the final decision/group consensus of how the problem was to be solved These are the specific behaviors of how people react in a learning situation. 3. For my presentation I have chosen the concept of COACHING. This topic is an obvious one for me since I have spent much of my life playing hockey and therefore involved with team sports. With every team there is a coach and they approach things differently, however, the final outcome of WINNING is common. This I feel is the same in the business world. To characterize some coaching strategies I have experienced I will focus on my hockey career. a) In Junior, I had a coach that I would characterize as hard nosed. He demanded a strong work ethic from his players and a high level of dedication to the game. His attitude towards coaching was “this is how you do it” and “I’ll show you!” how to play the game. As a coach, he relied heavily on intimidation and the fear of failure in order to get the most out of his players.
