s The Crucible is a play that is very complex and has many different layers of characters and stories. The main conflict that ultimately begins and ends the play is the affair between John Proctor and Abigail Williams. This event takes place before the play actually starts, but it has a major impact on the entire story. Although John and Abigail obviously have some sort of mutual attraction for one another before the witch trials get fired up, increasing tension between the two undoubtedly leads to a lot of problems in Salem. First of all, John declines all of Abigail’s attempts to pursue anymore sexual activity. “Proctor: Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin’ for you more.” (839) This obviously angers Abigail and she is left in a state of sexually jealousy that surely influences some of her actions.” I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men!
