Women’s Discrimination in Augusta National
When the Suffrage Act was passed in 1920, it was one giant step towards equal rights for women when they won the right to vote. Since then women have been fighting for equal rights in various fronts. However, even with the struggles through all these years, women are still not being treated as equals to their male counterparts in various parts of the society, and they are still being denied equal rights as men in various places today. One of the biggest recent news events on the Women’s Equal Right issues concerns the Augusta National Golf Club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the world, owner and host to the premier golf event, the Masters Golf Tournament. The Augusta National Golf Club has barred women from their membership, discriminating female golfers based on their gender. The question we have to ask today is, should the Augusta National Golf Club admit memberships of female golfers? While the Augusta National Golf Club may be within the law in discriminating against women, I believe that the club should be morally obligated to open its doors to women, because the message it sends out by not admitting women into the club is that women are not the equal of men.
