The public believed that AMD was incapable of comparing to Intel. The price differences were so drastic that consumers began to suspect that AMD was just using out of date processors and claiming they were quicker than they were. ... The Compaq Computer Solutions Corporation decided to give AMD an opportunity to prove that they are just as efficient as Intel’s line of Pentiums. AMD produced the same quality product, but consumers were so helplessly attached to the Intel name that they were often willing to pay the extra money simply because the Intel processors were more popular.
