A Separate Peace By John Knowles A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, tells about a young man named Gene, who speaks in place of the narrator. Gene returns back to the Devon School in New Hampshire, where he was a former student along with his friend Finny fifteen years ago, just as World War II began. The story flashes back fifteen years, to the days of Gene and his best friend, Finny. On their first attempt to jump off a huge tree into the river, Finny, being the daredevil, goes first and Gene is the only one who follows. Gene, who is very conservative, tends to break the rules while hanging around Finny. Finny on the other hand can be described as an excellent student and a far more superior athlete than Gene. Finny always finds his way to become the best athlete in the school and the most charming. Because Gene realizes that Finny shares neither his sense of competition nor his resentment, Gene sinks into a jealousy more bitter than before, “He had never been jealous of me for a second. Now I knew that there never was and never could have been any rivalry between us. I was not of the same quality as he.
