‘The Power of One’ by Bryce Courtenay is the story of a boy named Peekay growing up in South Africa. The book starts in the year 1939 when Peekay is six and follows him until he is seventeen in 1951. ... When Britain declares war on Germany, one of the countries Boers are descended from, Peekay and his chicken friend, Granpa Chook, a present from a great African medicine man, the boys at Peekay’s school turn him into a prisoner of war, eventually leading to the death of his chicken when the boys stone him to death at the end of the school term. ...
This book helped me understand a lot about this period of history in South Africa. ... In the prison, the way blacks are treated is totally appalling, for example, one of the punishments by a particular cruel wards man at the prison named Borman is sticking a donkey pick up the asses of the prisoners. ... Peekay actually said in the book that at the school the best time was when he was slave to the Judge because all he had to do was do whatever the Judge told him to do and endure the occasional cunt on the head or rude push from an older kid.
