Introduction

For this project I am going to describe the process of setting up a LAN (Local Area Network) in a small business. A Local Are Network provides communication between computers and can make a business work more efficiently by cutting out the need to deliver notices, letters or files by hand as it can be sent to an office at the other side of the building in seconds. ... In this project I will be discussing:
· The company requirements,
· The considerations for installing the correct type of network to suit this company,
· A plan of the building drawn up in CAD,
· The computer requirements for each member of staff including both hardware and software required,
· The installation and configuration of the network,
· Finally I will discuss the Administration of this LAN. ... 10 employees require a computer and E-mail access,
3 require Internet access. ...
Software Required
The software required for each computer varies, as different people carrying out different jobs will use each computer. The software to be installed includes:

· Windows Professional 2000, as standard on all computers
· MS Office, as standard on all computers
· Dreamweaver and Adobe Photoshop, for the web designer
· TAS Accountant Plus, for the two accountants
· Auto CAD 14, for the architect
· SAP, for the warehouse operatives

Considerations for installing a network

There are a number of considerations to be taken into account when installing a network for this company. First of all we have to decide what sort of topology is required in a small business like this. ...

Topologies
Star Topology:

· Each user is connected directly to the hub resulting in each user getting use of the full bandwidth,
· All the devices can access the host but not necessarily each other,
· When one computer is powered off the network can still operate, bypassing that computer,
Disadvantage:
· If the server is down the network will be down.
Ring Topology:

· Computers are linked to each other and the host in a continuous circle,
· A message sent from one computer must pass the others until its destination is reached.
