Part 1
An operating system is the computer’s master control (the brain of the computer), which keeps the hardware and software running efficiently. An operating program conducts the communication between various pieces of hardware and applications. It is the first software we see when we turn on the computer, and the last software we see when the computer is turned off.
The main jobs or functions the operating system performs are:
o File Management- The computer must be able to keep files organized
o Peripheral connections- Interpret information and sends it to different peripherals
o Coordination of tasks- Have many programs and applications open (multitasking)
o Memory management- Have memory available for multitasking
o User management- A security device (type in a name and password to prevent other people from getting into your files)
Part 2

Microsoft DOS (Disk Operating System) is a command line user interface.
