Computers and Art Therapy
Through out my college career I have studied art, computer programs and principles of design. I have put all of my efforts into visual arts and I’m now interested in how art software facilitates other areas of the field, particularly art therapy. My review is over two books on one on traditional art therapy and the other on computer art therapy. The first book gives general applications of traditional therapy called, Art Therapy in the United States by Elinor Ulman. ... Malchiodi wrote the second book, Art Therapy and Computer Technology.
The purposeful use of art to meet psychological needs is about 65 years old. When Adrian Hill first coined the term ‘art therapy’ in 1938, he meant simply that art does therapeutic work (Thomson 3). Before this it was unheard of to relate art to therapy, even though people were using creative expression for years. Art therapy is based on releasing the unconscious by means of spontaneous art expression (Ulman 7).
Art as therapy is not so controversial anymore, but the media you choose to express yourself is starting to be examined.
