In the article “Patti Pena’s letter to Car Talk,” Patti Pena tells an emotional account of how her baby was killed by a man talking on a cell phone while driving (2000). She says that statistics show that 85% of cell phone subscribers use cell phones while driving. People like Patti Pena are leaning on legislators to create laws that restrict cell phone use to hand-held devices while driving. Some people even go as far to ban cell phone use while driving period. This subject has spurred heated debates all over the country, and even though the argument against cell phone use while driving is emotionally compelling, the arguments for it is more intellectually sound. I believe that cell phones alone are not the cause of such accidents, poor drivers who cannot gauge their abilities are. Thus, any legislation proposed to bar cell phone use while driving will not solve this problem.
