Thorstein Veblen, a notable economist and social scientist, coined the term “technological determinism” in 1915 when he presented his views of a growing “technocratic” nation, America. Technological determinism is a term used to identify technology, wholly, as the prime cause for social change. There have been many controversial opinions regarding the aspect of technology and its role in society. ... Technology was indeed the sole antecedent cause of changes and shaping of the American society and culture during the beginning of the 20th century to the present time. Three reasons which point to this is its presence in literature of the 20th century, in law and political ideals set during the 20th century and the history throughout the 20th century.

Throughout the twentieth century, technology has been a vital constituent of the notions of mankind and its view of productivity, ingenuity as well as causes for complex social reactions. Industrialization was a growing aspect of American conventional standards and represented the creation of a base where American cultural and social values could expand on. ... Other transportation vehicles include the airplanes, a simple necessity in American life which has huge implications on America’s social complexity. The following graph reflects different technology uses in terms of the percentage of the American population using them:
The graph above shows the rise in use of various technologies over time. ... This indicates that they held a different place in society, and had a stronger social and cultural impact than the others. Notice that both technologies exhibit a significant dip in use during the time of the Depression.
