PAPER 1 THE END USER COMPUTING ENVIRONMENT 1. WHAT IS END USER COMPUTING ? In order to provide appropriate definition for End-User Computing it is necessary to first provide some clarifications. This is largely because the term End-User; although often used in computing literature, does not always have the same meaning each time it is used. ... Also, there is the need to explain the word computing before the combination of the term and the would can be explained in proper context. The definition of End-User Computing will therefore be based on the following steps: What is computing, Identify who are End-Users in the context of this paper, and then, Put two and two together from the two steps above to arrive at the meaning of End-User Computing. ... 1 What is Computing ? A simple definition of computing is to describe it as consisting of processes in the application of computer to produce results. ... The Computing processes are illustrated in figure 1. ... This is largely correct because computing in anchored on the simple steps of: getting together what is required to start, executing instructions that would lead to the solution step by step one after the other until the solution is obtained, and, putting out the results obtained in the form that is required. However there are some additional implications of the diagram which differentiate computing processes from clerical processes. The input processes are essentially connected with converting the inputs from their base of existence into computer readable form, The output processes convert the results from processing which is in computing readable form into the required form for expressing the result, and, The core processes are carried out in forms which are completely electronic and not visible to the human eye. The sum of all these computing processes can be divided into two groups. ... People around computing are divided into these groups. ... In relating to the diagram in Figure 1, the What group of people are only directly concerned with the early parts of the input processor and the end parts of the output processes. ... 2 Who are End Users The End Users are the people who constitute the What group as explained above. ... There are different classes of End-Users. ... People who may fall into this class are refereed to as Casual End-Users. ... For example a Power User of spreadsheet applications will have advanced skills in this area, including developing spreadsheet macros (hence the programming skills). ... This taxes the resources of base PC configurations (hence the term Power User. ... 3 End User Computing is: End User Computing implies the existence of a program within an organisation aimed at ensuring that the various classes of End-Users are capable of taking increasing advantage of available computer technology up to the point of being able to develop some computer applications. This definition has a number of key implications which are: The organisation is determined to transform its various categories of End Users from the state of just knowing what is processed to a level of knowing how the processing is done and being able to apply such knowledge. The organisation recognises that the trend in computer technology is for products that are increasingly End User friendly and it want Users to be able to take fully advantage of such facilities The End User being able to produce some Computer Applications himself, will be able to relate better with Computer Professionals and thereby play his roles more effectively in the development of Computer Applications. The aim of End User Computing is not to turn all End Users into Computer Professionals. It is designed to ensure that the End Users develop a measure of Do it Yourself ability without requiring specialised skills of computer professionals. |
