In this essay I will be looking at the changes and effects that science and technology had on everyday life between 1870 and 1950. Between 1870 and 1950 there were a number of new scientific advancements and technological advancements, which combined to create various substances and machines including petrol engines, electric motors and other new modes of transport. ... Radios became widely used because of mass production coming into effect. ... By 1884, long distance connections were made between Boston, Massachusetts and New York City. ... Television was first introduced in the 1930’s which had a great social effect in the 1950’s as families stayed in to watch television whereas before going out would have been more appealing. The introduction of television also had a great effect on the way the general public received information and worldwide news was made more readily available. ... Machine guns were first used in the American Civil War to devastating effect. ... New gas bombs and grenades were a development of science and were used devastatingly in the First World War. ... Naval units had been developed massively and submarines were now being employed by the Germans and were used to great effect in World War One. ... This showed the Government’s trust in technology and science as they were already planning the construction of roads for thirty years into the future. This showed the Governments belief that they could plan many years into the future without the backing of science and technology to provide the relevant resources for the construction plans. ... Overall between 1870 and 1930 there were many positive and negative developments which changed the way people lived their lives and which also changed the way that people viewed life in general. ... Overall, the developments in technology and science have improved the way of life for the general public but there have been some negative effects on society in this era as new technological and scientific advancements were used to a negative effect on society. |
