Fuel cells were first thought about in London around 1839 when Sir William Grove discovered that it might be possible to reverse the electrolysis of water and produce electricity. In 1889, also in Britain, Charles Langer and Ludwig Mond engineered the first ¡§fuel cell,¡¨ as they termed it. ... The internal combustion engine and steam machines temporarily quashed research on fuel cells. In 1932, Francis Bacon of Britain developed the first functional fuel cell, using a hydrogen-oxygen cell composed of alkaline electrolyte and nickel electrodes. Due to the technical hurdles, the first practical fuel cell was not produced until 1959. ... Bacon and company demonstrated a five-kilowatt fuel cell and another inventor, Harry Karl Ihrig of Allis-Chalmers presented a 20-horsepower fuel cell-powered tractor. Also in the ¡¥50¡¦s, NASA funded hundreds of research contracts involving fuel-cell research for electrical power in space missions, of which the majority of missions use the technology for on-board electrical power.
