By now everyone has heard about the recalls on many Firestone tires on Ford vehicles, mainly the Explorer. The tires on these vehicles, (Firestone) including the Firestone ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness, would heat up on the highway and cause tread separation which in turn would result in the vehicle rolling over or some other sort of catastrophic crash. Ford Claims that the problem was caused by a defect in how the tired was made, others think, myself included, that the problem was caused by the factory air pressure settings. ...
(Firestone) The Ford Explorer was first offered for sale in March 1990. Numerous Ford internal documents show the company engineers recommended changes to the vehicle design after it rolled over in company tests prior to introduction, but other than a few minor changes, the suspension and track width were not changed because this would have delayed the introduction date by as much as ten months.
