The word “Freedom” is an interesting one and can be defined and interpreted in many different ways. The Merriam-Webster dictionary states that freedom is the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action; liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another. ... Freedom is “what this country was built on.” Freedom is how many people define their lives in America. Freedom is a clever piece of propaganda used to pacify a public which is actually not free at all.
Freedom is a relative quality. ... One can only possess this intangible freedom by comparing oneself to a group or person he feels is more oppressed than himself. ... “Our freedom has been attacked by a envious enemy,” fallacious pundits we often heard to say, “but they did not destroy the spirit of America, the freedom which we all live for. ... What rules then, what obligations are there that the American public must adhere to when delighting in this wonderful thing we call freedom? It would be nice to be able to assume that there are a few simple rules one must follow when enjoying one’s freedom. It would be nice to be able to assume that the hackneyed adage “free speech does not apply to yelling ‘fire’ in a crowded theater” would be one of the only restraints placed on freedom.
