Genetic Engineering
Genetic Engineering, the term given to the procedure of altering the natural characteristics of an organism by implanting into it a piece of the genetic material of another organism. There are two types of GE, Somatic and Germline. Somatic gene therapy is a bit like medicine, it involves placing new modified genes abroad viruses and then inserting it into a persons cells hoping that the virus will infect the cells, which will then transmit and spread the genes. Germline GE however is widely debated. Scientists begin with a fertilized embryo, they then extract one cell from it and then add to, modify or take out some of its genes. This means they could also insert laboratory made chromosomes that contain pre-designed genes.
