Abstract

Electricity is most noticed when it is absent. The goal of the Georgia Power Company is to keep electricity flowing to its customers regardless of the circumstances. ... Georgia Power uses the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system in its Transmission Control Center to identify and respond to power outages. Georgia Power previously relied on customer phone calls and physical searches for downed lines. Today, SCADA notifies the control center when and where a problem occurs, allowing repair crews to be dispatched and power restored more quickly. This project explores how this system functions, its software and hardware components, its impact on the Transmission Control Center, how it gives Georgia Power a competitive advantage, the future of the technology, and ways it can be enhanced or improved.

Introduction
In his 1976 book “The Year the Lights Came On,” former Georgia Power public relations director Terry Kay spun a tale of the impact electricity had on a rural, northeast Georgia community in 1947. ...
Despite such high and noble descriptions of its business, the Atlanta-based Georgia Power Company must confront the down-to-earth details of providing electricity to its customers. ... This decidedly low-tech approach has been replaced with a complex and evolving computerized system that notifies Georgia Power officials when outages occur without having to receive calls from customers.
Georgia Power doesn’t have the luxury of being able to claim “Oops, we couldn’t help that there was a tornado. ...
Georgia Power must restore power quickly to its customers. ...
So how does Georgia Power maintain its competitive advantage over its existing competitors – electrical cooperatives, natural gas, and alternative energy sources? Georgia Power utilizes technologies that help it address the inevitable power outages caused by severe weather, natural disasters, or even vehicular accidents. This report will explore the systems Georgia Power uses in its Transmission Control Center (TCC) by providing company history and background, an overview of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and its related software and hardware systems, a description of the evolution of the system, a detailed listing of the advantages and disadvantages of the technology, an analysis of future applications and developments of the technology, and a compilation of recommendations and conclusions. ...

Background
In order to understand the benefits of the TCC, a person must understand how electricity transmission works. ... Tall metal transmission towers keep the power lines that carry electricity far off the ground, and “electricity-proof” insulators made of glass or porcelain keep the electric current from leaving the power lines and entering the metal towers. ... The electric current moves from the transmission lines to the distribution lines of local power companies. ... com/electricity)
