Radio’s impact on society.
By examining radio’s history and development, it becomes clear that society and societies needs helped to shape radio, but radio has had a great impact on the way that society functions.
The initial function of radio, and almost every other technology, has changed dramatically over the years. Several scientists devised the first forms of radio, notably Italian scientist Guglielmo Marconi, with attempts to “transmit messages over distances, first by means of wireless telegraphy and then by wireless telephony” (Crisell,86:19). Radio was “primarily envisaged as a means of point-to point communication, for example ship-to-shore” (Crisell, 86:19). ... This point-to point, two-way form of communication is a big change from the radio that we know today.
Because of the social environment of the 1920’s, radio went from this point-to-point style communication to a more one-way form. ... Advertising also helped to make this one-way communication device a household name, as “the radio was marketed and promoted as part of the new range of electrical technologies which were transforming the home (Potts, 89:14). Along with the social need of more efficient communication devices, came the architectural change of radio as a one-way listening device.
With the introduction of radio came a certain amount of ‘hype’. In the 1920’s, people “saw radio as a new religion, promoting its future in much the same rosy language as today’s goggled-eyed prophets promote the information superhighway” (Nachman, 98:16). ... This idea of radio as a democratic space stemmed from the point-to point communication model, so now that the technology was one-way programs, such as talkback, were devised to maintain this image.
