The experimentation on animals has resulted in the some of the greatest discoveries in the history of mankind. Animal experimentation for medical and scientific research is not only moral and ethical, but it is beneficial to human life. ...
Yet, human beings are not the only ones who benefit from animal research. ... So what would happen if all animal experimentation would come to a halting stop? ... In the past 100 years, animal studies have led to these biomedical developments: ointments for treating wounds, description of how metabolism, circulation of blood, and the lungs work, blood pressure measuring, multiple cures for diseases, the stethoscope, anesthetics on operations, discovery of X-rays, understanding the hormone system, discovery of nerves, understanding hearing, introduction of “test tube” babies, and the first animal cloned (“Benefits” 4). There has been a resistance against animal testing for more than four hundred years. Those opposed to animal experimentation claimed that their common ability to suffer and their common right not to suffer and die at the hands of others link animals to humans. ... By the early part of the nineteenth century, animal research became organized, systematic part of science. This was when public opinion began to become in favor of animal research. ... They stated that animal experimentation could continue as long as scientists needed to make sure that the animals were not treated cruelly (Day 38). Later in the nineteenth century, many animal protection groups were formed, although many efforts were made to ban animal testing, none were successful. ... Now, due to medical advances based on animal testing, the average lifespan has increased to over seventy-five years. ... Millions of people live healthy lives because of the vaccines available due to animal testing.
