The first day of band we were handed our mouthpieces and told to buzz. The noise could not have been worse. It was as if twenty-five ducks had waddled into the room with sore throats. The following weeks were tough; the throbbing pain in our heads and the strain to push out that one last note before you ran out of breath was almost unbearable. When we were told to match a pitch on the piano, you would be surprised at how many variations of one note were possible. There were times that it seemed as if I would never figure out how to play correctly and produce the right sound, and it seemed easier to give up than to embarrass myself trying. However, I was determined that I would not be one of the few ducks that remained in the room, and if I was, I would at least be proud of the sound I was making.
