News on Television Overpowers the Newspaper

... News provides us insight to what is happening daily in our society. ... Technology in media has allowed for other sources of news to become more popular, such as television. Through research and observation of news coverage on television and newspapers, it was evident that television allows the American society to receive the most recent news quicker, provide the news within a short limited time and attracts many viewers. Because news coverage on television is strengthened by technology in the media, the newspaper falls behind in popularity and reliability.
Newspapers were the main source of news for people in America a few decades ago. In Leo Bogart’s Press and Public, he describes that newspapers were the most popular source for news. More specifically Bogart states, “Between 1970 and 1979, the proportion of adults over 18 who read a newspaper over the course of five weekdays has remained at the level of nearly nine out of ten” (52). Almost every adult in America was reading the newspaper to obtain their news. ... This shows that half of the adult population reads the newspaper consistently throughout the weekdays. Clearly newspapers were the most popular source for Americans obtaining their news.
The popularity of the newspaper declined with the strengthening of news being presented on television. Currently there are a greater variety of programs presented on television than there are of different newspapers. According to an article published in Columbia Journalism Review, which was entitled, “Study: TV Equals, Sometimes Beats Newspaper News” most Americans get their news from television. The article goes on more specifically to mention that according to surveys in the year 1995, “44 percent of Americans get all their news from television vs. ... ” Americans who get their news from television more than double those who get their news from newspapers.
