Network and Telecommunications Paper

Network and Telecommunications Comparison Paper Synchronous is occurring in unison with a separate signal. In synchronous data transmission, there are two signals, data and clock. The clock signal indicates exactly when the data line should be read in order to obtain each successive bit. Asynchronous is the opposite, not synchronized. For example, most computer terminals use asynchronous data transmission, in which the terminal or the computer is free to transmit any number of characters at any time. (The pauses between characters can be of any duration.) Synchronous terminals, by contrast, transmit data in packets of more than one character. This is faster than asynchronous communication because there is no need for a start bit or stop bit on each individual character. Analog represents data in a form other than binary bits. The image picked up by a conventional camera or scanner and the sound picked up by a microphone are examples of analog data that must be digitized (converted into the computer’s internal representation) in order to be stored in a computer. Digital represents information as electrical “on” and “off” signals that correspond to binary digits and can be stored in computer memory. Digital electronics contrasts with analog electronics, which represents information with signals that vary within a predefined range. Digital signals have two advantages: they can be copied exactly, without even the slightest loss of quality, and they can be further processed by computer. X-ON and X-OFF are codes that respectively turn off and on the transmission of data from a computer to a terminal.
