Organic Transistors Expedite Flexible EL Displays

The development of organic transistors for organic EL displays continues, with the aim of attaining display flexibility unavailable in LCD designs.

Organic electroluminescent (EL) displays are attracting considerable attention as display devices for cellular phones and personal digital assistants (PDA). Many experts in the field say the displays stand out for their lightness and flexibility. ... The organic EL panel, however, doesnt have these problems, and that is exactly why it is a candidate for the flexible displays of tomorrow. Existing organic EL displays still use "hard" silicon-based thin-film transistors (TFT) and are therefore difficult to bend. As a result, engineers are turning to transistors made with organic semiconductors, which offer flexibility.

Operating Frequency

Organic transistors are usually fabricated by evaporating or coating organic materials on plastic substrates. These organic materials are normally bonded together by Van der Waals force, so that they possess much more flexibility than materials with covalent bonds, such as silicon (Si) crystal.

Organic transistors with operating frequencies of several Hertz can be used as electronic paper TFTs for displaying still images. ...

"Merely replacing TFT with organic transistors would not be much different in terms of portability from existing displays," said Professor Kazuhiro Kudo, Department of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Chiba University. "The display will only be truly phenomenal when all the circuits, including peripherals, are organic."

This will require boosting the operating frequency up to 1MHz, leading to round displays capable of being rolled up like a cigar. ... Compared to silicon, organic semiconductors generally have lower carrier mobility, but the pace of growth in carrier mobility is picking up due to new materials and improved organic semiconductor manufacturing technologies (Fig 1). Recent organic semiconductors offer about the same carrier mobility as the Si TFT used in commercial displays. ... Chiba University announced organic transistors operating at 30 to 40kHz in September 2001.

There has also been an increase in the number of display prototypes using organic TFT. Lucent Technologies, Inc and E Ink Co, both of the US, use organic TFT in their electronic paper display, which they developed jointly. Royal Philips Electronics NV of the Netherlands uses organic TFT in its LCD panels. ...

Raising Frequency

R&D groups are working to boost operating frequency in two different ways: one approach is to develop organic semiconductor materials with high carrier mobility, and the other is to improve the structure of the transistor.
