The first ever instance of a calculating device was the abacus. It was nothing more than a wooden rack with several beads strung across it. It was used to perform several arithmetic operations. It has been around for over 2,000 years. Later, in the early 1600s, Charles Napier developed a device known as Napier?s Bones, which was used to assist with multiplication. It consisted of a series of rods. In 1942, Blaise Pascal built the first digital calculating machine. It could only perform addition operations. In 1671, Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz invented a calculator that could add and multiply. In 1820 Charles Xavier Thomas developed a calculator that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
