INTRODUCTION
The motherboard is, in many ways, the most important component in a computer. Originally PC’s had a minimum of integrated devices. ... But over time, more devices have been integrated into the motherboard.
The motherboard plays an important role in the functionalities of a computer system.
The motherboard is a large printed circuit card, that contains a microprocessor, BIOS program chips, sockets and slots for other devices to be plugged in, such as floppy disc drives, and the original cassette drives, that were common storage mediums and various interconnections which are technically named as buses which between them control most of the data flow within a computer.
Somehow or another all devices in connection with a computer are connected to the motherboard, communications between the PC and its peripherals, and even other PCs, go through the motherboard. The motherboard determines, what types of peripherals tht can be used in a PC. For example, the type of graphics card a system uses depends on the system buses used by the motherboard. Efficiency of the system also is influenced by the motherboard, in relation with other components and the motherboard circuitry.
Another major thing with motherboard nowadays is the concept of upgradibility, to improve system performance as new products are available upon the marketplace. For this reason motherboard have what is known as form factors.
Form factors describe the general shape of the motherboard, the different types of fascias that can be used for the physical appearance and organisation of the system. ...
MOTHERBOARD COMPONENTS
The motherboard has various components that are required for its basic functionalities; it is the central processing unit, the microprocessor, that is the most important component of the motherboard. ... A Motherboard, also sometimes called PCBs (Printed Circuit Board) is a square board that has circuits edged into it made of silicon, which has connections to different areas of the board. At one time this was expensive, difficult-to-manufacture technology, but over time PCBs have become a minor component of overall cost of a PC. ... The PC motherboard’s components also have several different running frequencies. ... This allows the user to tell the PC what hardware is fitted, but thanks to automatic self-configuring BIOSes this isnt used so much now. ... Once the machine has booted, the BIOS serves a different purpose by presenting DOS with a standardised API for the PC hardware. ...
Whilst the PCI interface has helped - by allowing IRQs to be shared more easily - the limited number of IRQ settings available to a PC remains a problem for many users. ... These slots allow the expansion capabilities for the system in many different ways, for this reason the PC platform has become so successful and popular. ...
The size of an AT motherboard caused problems for upgrading PCs and did not allow use of the increasingly popular "mini" desktop or minitower cases. ...
BAT
The Baby AT (BAT) reduced the size of the motherboard to about 9inches wide by 10 inches long, and BAT motherboards are generally characterised by their shape,
With the BAT design the processor socket is located at the front of the motherboard, and full-length expansion cards are intended to extend over it.
