Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is one of the seven world wonders and a civil engineering master piece. ... This was all done in the late 1800 and early 1900 by a group of visionaries that thought they could transform Mother Nature and unite two of the greatest oceans in one single canal. The Panama Canal is one of the most important routes for the merchant mariners making the trip from east to west a lot shorter: that means saved money. Panama is a very small country with a population of only three million and just 76 square miles of territory and the isthmus has about 40 miles of land around the area where the Canal is situated.
I am proudly Panamenian and I live just fifteen minutes away from the Pacific end of the Canal. I’ve been watching ships going through the Canal my entire life and still every time I look at it working I feel amazed by all the forces that make such a huge man-made workstation function. A year ago my life was not going around the Panama Canal at all and I never thought about working for it. ... Now, I appreciate the Panama Canal a lot more because I don’t see it everyday and also because I am beginning to see the tremendous importance of it. I’m planning on being a pilot for the Panama Canal Authority and cruise the ships through the twelve hour period it takes to steer them from ocean to ocean.
