Although more efficient operations and prevention of pipeline disasters are factors for pipeline operators, the most exigent drivers within the United States are regulatory pressures.
The United States Department of Transportation, Office of Pipeline Safety (“OPS”) have had various compliance regulations and required reports, submission requirements for the National Pipeline Mapping System, and, most recently, adoption of a rule for pipeline integrity. All of these regulations require direct reporting of pipeline asset information or various analyses to be performed on that data.
