PC Standards The problem with Larry, Moe, and Curley Enterprises is that it is a growing firm that could soon encounter many problems with their computers because the company is outgrowing its old technology requirements. The main problem of aging technology, operating systems, and basic computer applications could be a bottleneck on the company’s ability to evolve with their strengthening demand. Another major problem with the setup of this firm is that there is too much differentiation in the area of computer desktops, making all sorts of potential hazards in the firm’s ability to adapt to new situations and market conditions. The incapability to adapt quickly could cost them dearly in their future capacity to administer their business. The solution to the problems of Larry, Moe, and Curley Enterprises is not very difficult, but it will require the cooperation of the Finance, Marketing, Administration, Sales, and Manufacturing departments. It may also require some additional spending to bring the technology to a better business standard. The first and foremost standard should be to move most of the departments to one brand of PCs like Dell and to use a an up to date, user-friendly operating system like Microsoft Windows XP Professional and applications like Microsoft Office XP. The old desktops can be stored away or sold to other firms. The only exception to this rule should be the marketing department because they have different needs. Assuming that the laptops in the sales department are current, they will also not need to change much except for their operating systems. Thus, the number of computer vendors should be kept down to two: Dell and Apple. With this upgrade, the company will be able to move forward to easily run new applications and adapt new employees to their working environment. The rough cost of this kind of upgrade will be approximately fifty-five thousand dollars. The standardization of the desktop PCs and the operating systems should take place as soon as possible.
