Record Storage and Primary File Organizations

• In a modern computer system data resides and is transported throughout a hierarchy of storage media.
• The primary storage level:
• Cache memory: used by the CPU to speed up execution of programs also known as static RAM
• Main memory: provides the main work area for the CPU for keeping programs and data also known as dynamic.
• The secondary storage level: This includes magnetic tapes, mass storage, flash memory, optical juke box memories.
• Most databases are stored permanently on magnetic disk secondary storage for the following reasons:
• Databases are too large to fit in main memory
• The cost of storage per unit of data is an order of magnitude less for disk than for primary storage
• The circumstances that cause permanent loss of data arise less frequently for disk secondary storage than for primary storage.
