What is Courage? Heroes are meant to fight courageously and to be willing to sacrifices his or her own life for the good of others. In Stephen Crane’s novel The Red Badge of Courage, the character of Henry Fleming lacks bravery, and cannot be called a hero. Henry enters the Civil War as an infantryman for the Union army. As a young soldier he romanticized war based on tales of ancient Greek heroes in Homer. Henry feels as if he will be able to live out these great adventures that he has read about as a young man. When Henry finally reaches the battle lines, he quickly realizes that he is not as courageous as he once felt that he was. Henry meets his fellow soldiers, many of whom have not seen combat.
