The social dimensions of scientific knowledge encompasses the effects of scientific and technological research on human life and social relations, the effects of social relations and values on scientific research, and the social aspects of inquiry itself. ...

Two main characters can be defined in this interaction; scientist, as a source of the knowledge, and the public as a receiver. The interaction does not occur as a form of two distinguished points but as a complex web of interactions in different dimensions, increasingly distributed throughout the layers of the public. ... Depending on the quality and time and place of the knowledge, the public receive, use and integrate the knowledge in specific and highly selective ways, find the ways to fit it into their everyday world of understanding, and daily concerns. ... With the increasing educational standards and wide cultural and technological message of science to society, public is now more aware of the scientific information and knowledge. Therefore, a mixture of expert, proto expert and lay interests shape and legitimate the structured societal spaces of discourse and knowledge claims. ... These are; public space of individual scientific creativity and of socially determined knowledge structures, ethnic aspects of science, professional and lay knowledge in the case of health and illness, market and the hybrid of public discourse. ... Individual scientific creativity, which is at the root of productivity in science, needs to encounter, and become transformed, the public scientific knowledge shared by the scientific community. In that sense, validated and objectified scientific knowledge need tools and a medium to interact with the public. The access to the social distributed knowledge of the time, and the individual’s idiosyncratic and unique way of appropriating and modifying it, marks scientific creativity. ... But there was an increasing translation from passive forms of public into involvement of the public in scientific knowledge.
