The Ethics ofPeer-to-peer Filesharing

One issue prominent in today’s technocratic society is the right to ownership of electronic media. Fortunately for this class, this particular issue encompasses a number of various aspects of mass media. The issue has been propagandized by the media, probably at the bequest of the Recording Industry Association of America. The issue has been blown out of proportion over the past years, and this “war” on the evil 12 year olds of our country needs to come to an end. In 1997 Shawn Fanning went public with perhaps one of the most controversial software applications invented since the dawn of modern computing. His software – dubbed Napster, in light of a personal nickname – allowed clients to connect to an “indexing server” where their collection of MPEG Layer-3 compressed music files (.mp3) would be catalogued. Then when a user wished to find another file, they would make a search query to this indexing server, and be presented with a list of files for download.
