EW YORK (Reuters) - Business software maker Novell Inc. said on Tuesday it would buy Linux software developer SuSE Linux AG of Germany for $210 million, boosting its hold on corporate networks and sending its shares up 45 percent. ADVERTISEMENT Novell (NasdaqNM:NOVL - News), based in Provo, Utah, also said International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE:IBM - News), a major backer of Linux software, plans to make a $50 million investment in Novell convertible preferred stock, giving it a 2 percent stake, executives said. Under Chief Executive Jack Messman, Novell has been using Linux, an alternative to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system, as a part of a strategy to tap the exploding market for network computers that can run any kind of software.
