The system unit is the most essential part of the computer. It houses different kinds of components from the processor to various kinds of memory and the electronics that control different components. The processor chip is the heart of the computer. The speed of the processor is measured in megahertz (MHz), and the bigger the number the faster the processor. The processor measures the length of time it take the computer to perform a task. The processor chip and the electronics that support it are referred to as the Central Processing Unit (CPU). The computer has to be able to store huge amount of information. It has two different kinds of memory Random Access Memory (RAM) and Read Only Memory (ROM). The computer uses RAM as a sort of working area while it is carrying out a given task. Here it holds list of instructions that it currently working on, the data on which it is working. RAM (random access memory) is the place in a computer where the operating system, application programs, and data in current use are kept so that they can be quickly reached by the computer's processor. RAM is much faster to read from and write to than the other kinds of storage in a computer, the hard disk, floppy disk, and CD-ROM.
