Computers have grown to become a very important tool for modern day communication; therefore, the interface of computer plays a major role in the communication experience. ... ¡¦ Many computer interface objects have been metaphorically named in such a way to help us communicate with the computer better. This communication with the computer can occur on different levels depending on the interface or environment that you are in; you can be mentally, emotionally and physically affected by different ways of communicating with different computer interface. Computer interfaces can be screen based, attachments or extensions of the human body and virtual environments.
Computer interfaces have come a long way from its original intention of being just a workstation that uses traditional punch cards. ... There are two main types of interfaces; physical interface and screen based interface.
The most common types of physical interface would be the keyboard and mouse, they can be considered more or less as an extension of the physical human body. These physical interfaces were first developed to enhance human and computer interaction, but in order to communicate with the computer through these fixed physical interfaces, the user is usually bounded to their desk and that creates a sense of alienation. It is quiet interesting to see how the tools that were first created to enhance human and computer interaction are now limiting the imagination of how people can communicate with computers. People are now searching for different types of physical interfaces such as drawing tablets, web cameras and voice activation systems which allows them to both communicate with the computer efficiently, yet at the same time, allow some space for imagination and creativity. ... Due to the fact that screen based interfaces are more elaborate, metaphors have been applied to objects to better help users understand what they are for. The most common interface metaphor is the desktop. ... This type of metaphorical naming is very common in computer interfaces as to help people ease into the process of communicating with computers. ... Screen based interface also extends onto the World Wide Web, or otherwise known as the Internet. WebPages, navigation bars, windows are all metaphorical terms that are commonly used for web based materials; even the terms ¡§web¡¨ and ¡§net¡¨ are metaphors.
Metaphors are designed to help users ¡§quickly learn how to use a computer system¡¨ and also to ¡§increase the familiarity with interfaces.
