In the late 1960s, Xerox founded Palto Alto Research Center (PARC), California. ... Xerox originally founded PARC as a research arm however it ended up functioning more like an acedemic research center or a national computer lab. The innovations created at PARC became part of the public domain instead of a research-development part of the coporation (Goff pp.2)
Dozens of researchers and scientists at PARC gave birth to ideas and inventions which were the beginning of many aspects of modern computing, including the first Graphical User Interface(GUI) (Wikipedia).
